Welcome to Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Hall

Berwick Town Hall is a Grade I Listed building in the town centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The building is very much the centre of the town, being a focal point within the Elizabethan Walls and the most prominent landmark on any approach by road or rail.  The present building was designed by Samuel and John Worrell in the neo-classical style with the work undertaken by local builder, Joseph Dodds, work began at the eastern end in 1754 and the building was completed in its present form by 1761.

The Town Hall serves as a civic meeting place, wedding and event venue, and consists of three main floor levels. The ground floor contains a separately-run café premises and the covered Buttermarket, which hosts part of Berwick’s twice-weekly Charter Market. On the first floor, the stunning Guild Hall is available for hire for receptions, events and meetings, seating up to 150 people whilst the Ante Room is available for hire for smaller events and functions. Both of these rooms, and also the Council Chamber, are licensed wedding venues. On the second floor there is a museum that was once a jail and cells.

The Town Hall Keeper undertakes regular guided tours of the first and second floor including the museum.

Regrettably, it is not possible to view the first and second floors outwith the guided tours.
