Berwick Town Hall Tours

Only guided visits of the building are possible at present.
It is not open for casual visitors without a guide.

The guided visits begin each weekday at 10.30 am and 2.00pm between Easter and the end of September. Tours last 1 to 2 hours. The tours are of the first and second floor of the building with a museum on the second floor which was originally the town’s jail. Booking is not required but if you intend to bring a large group, please contact us in advance.

On the tour you will discover the history of the building including its many uses over the centuries including a court room, a jail, town meetings, a charter market, council chambers, a police station, wedding and event venue.

The museum on the second floor includes a mixture of items from the town’s history, from a Viking era sword to gifts from Berwick’s five twin towns around the world.

Our tour guides have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the building and the town, making the tours a memorable experience.

Highly informative A really informative tour and great way to learn about the history of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The Guild Hall has had many roles over the years and there are lots of interesting artefacts inside.

Brilliant tour of the town Hall, highly recommended Fantastic tour with Michael. He was the most fantastic guide. We got to discover the town Hall and all its uses over the years including dances, a court room, a prison, town meetings, the bell tower, a market, council chambers, a police station and housed the first fire engine. Great tour well worth doing. Michael made it a fun experience and wes extremely knowledgable about all things Town Hall related. Loved every minute. Only £5 per person and lasted 2 hours.

Great tour This was a great tour! We thought it might be interesting to see the guildhall and old gaol, but it was so much more than we expected, thanks to the excellent guide who had lots of interesting information and stories. Great value at £2.50. Would definately recommend.

The guide gave an excellent tour with a nice use of humour The tour was very interesting and well worth doing. The Guildhall is an old Georgian building. Upstairs was a function room, council chamber and office. The top floor had cells from its time as the jail including eighteenth century graffiti. Someone could get a PhD from the graffiti alone. The cells housed a small museum with eclectic mix items of items from Berwick's history ranging from a viking era sword to gifts from various twin towns from around the world. Cheap as chips - good value

Fantastic tour with a very knowledgeable guide I turned up for the afternoon tour and was lucky enough to be the only person that day, so essentially got a private tour. Michael was so full of knowledge about the whole building, I really enjoyed talking to him so much. The building itself is a real insight into the history of the town but also its present - absolutely recommend anyone visiting checks it out!

Excellent tour guide We turned up and found out we had arrived at the wrong time, but the guy in charge was so kind and helpful; he offered to show us around for a quick tour. The kids loved it and he explained lots of the history and funny stories about the building and what happened inside. It was a great tour and I can’t recommended it highly enough. The kids got ‘branded’ and loved it just as much as us. This is a special place with lots of history and an excellent tour guide.

A fab tour We turned up as the tour had started half an hour before hand. To be honest we didn’t expect much but we were very wrong. We had the best tour guide who was very knowledgeable about everything. We took my autistic son who was treated respectively and involved with activities. We learnt so much about the history of Berwick and found the whole tour very interesting. The tour is fab value for money and the highlight was definitely seeing the hails and courthouse. We all loved these and even got branded by 2022 standards! A fab few hours out.. thank you!

A gem of Berwick-Upon-Tweed that you must see! Wasn’t sure what to expect as there’s no booking, just turned up at 2pm hoping the tour guide would too! They did, instructing us to climb to the first landing and enter the impressive hall. £2.50 per adult and 50p per child was affordable but not worthy of the tour we received. The guide was very knowledgeable explaining the current building’s history. There is so much to see in the museum part in the gaol that my only complaint is I’d have liked to have been left to look at it all without the tour guide telling us more and pointing out some highlights but that is the only downside if I can even call it a downside. Very informative and enjoyable couple of hours spent here! I was there with my 11 year olds and they enjoyed it, there was a couple with a toddler and under 5 (at a guess) that unfortunately found it hard going and left partway through the tour so maybe not suitable for very young children.
